Meet Ellen from Nchalo, Malawi

"My husband and I laboured for years carrying bricks on our heads the money was never enough. One day through The Hunger Project I got the chance to take a micro-loan. I started a business! I have benefited a lot from the intentions of THP. I have managed to get this shelter, two houses, the cattle area with 16 cows, 27 goats after recently sold 10 goats, a TV and furniture (some washed go by cyclone Anna), a motorbike and all my children go to school. I can see our future is bright. And at the end of my life I will be buried with dignity knowing I've provided for those I left behind, just what I always wanted."

About The Women Empowered Fund

Women bear almost all responsibility for meeting basic needs of the family, yet are systematically denied the resources, information and freedom of action they need to fulfill this responsibility. As a result, the world’s poor are overwhelmingly women, as well as two thirds of the world’s illiterate population. And while women make up almost half of farmers in developing countries, they produce up to 30% less than their male counterparts, and account for less than 15% of farmland owners.

We’ve created the Women Empowered Fund in recognition of the issues of gender inequality that women face in overcoming hunger and poverty in the countries where we work.

Your donation could help train women in  modern farming techniques, help them access loans so  they can start their own businesses, and educate them about their rights and how to exercise them.

About The Hunger Project

The Hunger Project is a global organisation that has been working to solve hunger and poverty in remote communities across Africa, India, Bangladesh and Latin America for over forty years. Unlike many conventional aid models, we do this through innovative and proven in-country programs that empower communities to become self-reliant by giving them the skills, knowledge and resources they need to break the poverty cycle themselves. We identify and build community leaders, then enable them to unite and transform their village through education, agriculture, health and microfinancing. This allows them to create a hunger-free future we’re no longer needed for.
