This Christmas, give the gift of empowerment

At The Hunger Project, we believe that empowering and training women is one of the greatest investments you can make. That's why we created the Women Empowered Fund, focusing on the issues of gender inequality that women face in overcoming hunger and poverty in Africa, India, Bangladesh and Latin America. In these countries, women bear almost all responsibility for meeting basic needs of the family, yet are systematically denied the resources, information and freedom of action they need to fulfill this responsibility. As a result, the poor are overwhelmingly women, as well as two thirds of the illiterate population.

Our goal is to raise $1 million over three years, which will enable us to train and empower more women to lead sustainable change in their communities. This Christmas, we’re asking you to be a part of achieving this. Below, you can give to the fund, either from yourself or donate as a Christmas gift for someone special. If you choose to donate as a gift, we’ll email you a digital e-card you can send to the recipient. You can also buy one of our limited-edition prints or eco-friendly tote bags of Archibald-winning artist Wendy Sharpe’s incredible work painted exclusively for The Hunger project, ‘Women on the Ground’. Your investment could help train women in modern farming techniques, access loans so they can start their own businesses or educate them about their legal rights and how to exercise them.

Meet the artist, Wendy Sharpe

Wendy Sharpe is one of Australia’s most acclaimed artists. She has been the winner of The Sulman Prize (and a finalist thirteen times), the Archibald Prize (and a finalist eight times), The Portia Geach Memorial Award and many others. She currently works between Sydney and Paris, specialising in multiple mediums, from painting, to installation and performance.

Wendy is passionate about philanthropy and has painted 'Women on the Ground' exclusively for the Hunger Project Australia in order to raise funds to battle poverty and hunger in remote communities around the world. This moving piece depicts the resilience of two women farmers in the community of Nchalo, Malawi, who have both undertaken training by The Hunger Project.

About The Hunger Project

The Hunger Project is a global organisation that has been working to solve hunger and poverty in remote communities across Africa, India, Bangladesh and Latin America for over forty years. Unlike many conventional aid models, we do this through innovative and proven in-country programs that empower communities to become self-reliant by giving them the skills, knowledge and resources they need to break the poverty cycle themselves. We identify and build community leaders, then enable them to unite and transform their village through education, agriculture, health and microfinancing. This allows them to create a hunger-free future we’re no longer needed for.
